Improv Comedy Class

Arc Stages is proud to offer an 8-week improv comedy class for adults led by Jonathan Evan Goldberg, the President and co-founder of Cherub Improv, the premiere improv comedy non-profit dedicated to community service performances. Over the past 10+ years, Jonathan has taught and performed improv for thousands of people in need of laughter.

This class will help unleash your creativity, improve your confidence and public speaking skills, and develop your inner funny — all while meeting new people, reducing stress, and having fun! Open to new and returning students alike.

The Section I Improv Class is recommended for people with beginning as well as intermediate experience.
The Section II Class is recommended for those with moderate to significant experience.

Beginner Tap Dance

Instructor: Julie Connors Grunspan

For adults familiar with the basic steps, this Beginner tap class focuses on expanding vocabulary, improving rhythm, and developing style. Each class consists of Warmup, Center, Across-the-Floor, and Combination. Supportive, low key, friendly environment.

Introduction to Tap Dance

For adults new to tap dance, this basic level class focuses on vocabulary, rhythm, and musicality in a supportive and friendly environment. First class starts at the very beginning, with each week building upon itself. Tap shoes required.

Julie Connors Grunspan has appeared on Broadway in the original casts of Thoroughly Modern Millie, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Never Gonna Dance, and The Apple Tree (Revival). Her tapping feet enliven both the Thoroughly Modern Millie original cast album and Sherry! The Broadway Musical world premiere cast recording. Julie has studied tap in NYC, London, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and Northern California with Henry LeTang, Tobias Tak, Phil Black, Bob Audy, Ray Hesselink, Tony Coppola, Carlos Jones, and Fran Atlas Lara. Julie has contributed tap education and choreography to many organizations including UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television; UCLA Musical Theatre Workshop; Academy 331; Backstage Academy of Dance, Pleasantville Middle School, and Arc Stages. Julie earned a degree from UCLA and lives in Pleasantville, New York with her husband and two daughters.

Theatre Jazz Dance

Instructor: Ashley Smith-Wallace

Each class will include a warm-up, strength and conditioning, across the floor progressions and choreography. We will explore different genres with a focus on style, technique and musicality in a fun and inspiring environment. Let’s Dance!

Ashley Smith-Wallace is a three-time World Irish Step Dancing Champion. Originally from Boston, Ashley earned her Bachelor of Arts in Dance and Theatre from Manhattanville College in New York. Following her graduation, she performed in a number of regional theater productions, including West Side Story, Peter Pan, and Legally Blonde. She also served as the principal female dancer on the first national tour of Rockin’ Road to Dublin. Ashley gained national recognition as a Top 30 finalist on Season 7 of the hit FOX television series So You Think You Can Dance. Today, she is a respected choreographer and dance instructor based in Westchester County, New York.

Scene Study and Shaping the Actor’s Tools

Instructor: Ann-Ngaire Martin

In this adult scene study class, actors will engage in group warmups, relaxation techniques and sensory work exercises. Everyone will be assigned a scene partner and scene from a play to apply and practice these tools. This personal in-depth work will strengthen the actor’s inner life and imagination to help you become more present and grounded in your work. We will also address acting blocks, risk taking to make more interesting acting choices and personalizing your work.

Actors will learn new techniques, exercises, and be assigned a scene partner and scene from a play. Scene work will require outside of class hours, which each pair of scene partners will arrange at their convenience.

Ann-Ngaire Martin has been in professional theatre for over 40 years. A graduate of the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, NY and a long time acting student of Terry Schreiber. She has performed on Broadway, Off Broadway and in many Regional Theatres. She is one of the founders of Arc Stages as well as the Artistic Director of the Community Stage. Some of her directing credits at Arc Stages both for the Next Stage and Community Stage include: The Goat, See What I Wanna See, Animals Out of Paper, Gruesome Playground Injuries, She Loves Me, Into The Woods, Company, Light In The Piazza and Merrily We Roll Along.
